Where to find Silk Art Supplies

Where can I buy Silk Art Supplies?

What a great question! Here’s mine for you – which Country are you in?

There are:

  • different manufacturers in different countries
  • different suppliers in different countries
  • some suppliers who ship to other countries
  • different amazon stores (who may sell everything you need) depending on your location
  • different ‘creators’ who make great silk painting products
  • and no — I don’t know ALL of this info for every country, but I’m giving you some tips on where to start looking 🙂

In the image above, I have listed some amazon links for each item, and I’m going to list a few links below as well.

Please note I may receive a teeny tiny commission if you buy anything on amazon after you click my links – thank you.

What do I need to buy for silk painting in Australia?

  • silk Habotai, 8 Mommie (weight) is perfect for beginners
  • Silk Habotai Scarves, already hemmed which makes it easier to create something to wear straight away
  • paintbrushes – soft and suitable for watercolour painting
  • silk dyes – so many brands
    • Jacquard silk dyes can be found on amazon.com >>
    • and several local suppliers (who may also sell on amazon)
  • some type of resist product to create outlines and shapes to prevent the dyes from flowing too far – this is also known as an “outliner” or Gutta (pronounced Gootah)
  • Applicator bottle for Gutta
  • thumbtacks to pin the silk to a wooden frame (I use Fredrix artist stretcher bar frames – cheap and easy to assemble)
  • a frame (I use Fredrix artist stretcher bar frames – cheap and easy to assemble)
    • I buy 4 for each size scarf / frame, I create square and rectangular frames – so easy to assemble and pull apart! available on amazon.com >>
  • this is the bare minimum to get you started.

A supplier I’ve used quite a few times over the years in Australia and whose staff are very helpful, is KraftKolour.

Prices on their website as at March 2020:

  1. Habotai white silk, 8 Mommie, $A14.50/metre >>
  2. Clear, removable, water-based Gutta (outliner) 3 sizes from $A13.50 >>
  3. Gutta bottle – applicator (squeezy) $A2.45 >>
  4. Paintbrushes – local $2 shop, spend around $2 to $10 for a set
  5. Thumbtacks with coloured plastic ends – find in local $2 shop, pack of 20-50
  6. Wooden frame – at local art store, find Fredrix Stretcher Strips or Bars, buy 4 to make a frame, choose a size a few inches larger than the silk to be painted, e.g. 11″ silk hankie needs a 14″ frame, costing about $A15 to $25

I hope this helps, give me a yell if you have a question – post a Comment below or send me an email here >>
