Welcome to my Online Silk Painting Course Descriptions!
Hi – I’m Teena Hughes, I’m Australian, and I’ve taught silk painting in Australia and other places around the world – and ONLINE – for 30+ years (read a little more here).
The page gives brief descriptions of my current online Silk Painting Courses, Classes and Workshops (everyone has a different name for them):
- HOW TO USE PAPER PATTERNS AND TEMPLATES FOR SILK PAINTING – Many students like to start with a paper design which is then transferred to the stretched silk, but not everyone can work out the simplest ways to do this. In this Tutorial, I share my tried-and-tested techniques for creating, printing and attaching the template designs for the silk painting.
- USING COLD WAX AS AN OUTLINER – Cold Wax is an alternative way to outline shapes and sections of the silk before painting by hand. It is a thick white substance which can be brushed onto the silk with a hard brush. If you’re looking to create a design with thick, white outlines, this is the way to go. Painting and washing instructions form part of this online course with me, Teena Hughes.
- USING BAMBOO STEAMERS TO SET COLOURS — Steam-set silk dyes have traditionally been set in silk “steamers” which sat across a gas or electric stove top, or stood tall (powered by electricity). In this online course, I’ll show an alternative technique using a bamboo steamer. Painting and washing instructions form part of this online course with me, Teena Hughes.
- CREATING COLOURED OUTLINERS (NOT GUTTA) — I love to experiment, and when I first started using products to outline shapes and designs on the silk, I wanted to change the colour of the outliner. In this online course, I’ll be sharing my step-by-step techniques with you. Painting and washing instructions form part of this online course with me, Teena Hughes.
- DIFFERENT TYPES OF SILK & THEIR USES — As “newbies”, we learn how to paint on silk using Habotai silk (also known as Jap silk in come cultures). The more confidence we gain, the more we want to challenge ourselves. In thi online course about silk painting, I share my knowledge on different types of silk and their properties – and sometimes quirkiness. Painting and washing instructions form part of this online course with me, Teena Hughes.
- CREATING DESIGNS WITHOUT USING OUTLINERS — My fascination for creating designs on silk has never wavered in over 30 years of practice. I often challenged myself to use just TWO colours, and even won an award with one of my large wallhangings. This is a wonderful alternative to trying to create precise designs and to reproduce something with fine detail. In this online silk painting course we look at the many ways to create beautiful patterns and designs on the silk. Painting and washing instructions form part of this online course with me, Teena Hughes.
- MAKING BOOKMARKS WITH SILK — This fun course is one I love to teach in person, and have done so many, many times. It is easy for beginners, because there are no large pieces of silk involved. No silk painting is being taught here — this is using the silk artist’s leftover pieces of hand-painted or dyed silk and turning them into gorgeous bookmarks to share as gifts, or to sell to lovers of hand-painted art. Always a favourite with Students.
- MAKING GIFT CARDS WITH SILK — Gift cards with hand-painted silk on them are like mini paintings which can be framed, in fact I’ve often given these to friends and included a mini frame for them to keep the card in. This is a lovely way to display the card after the message has been read. This technique creates beautiful works of art which can be used as gifts or sold to customers.
- MAKING GIFT TAGS WITH SILK — this one is a bit of a twist — a totally unique way to make silk gift tags which will be kept and treasured for years to come.
