Frames
There are many ways to stretch silk before painting, and lots of variety in the types of frames.
- I use Fredrix Artist Stretcher Bars – 4 wooden piece which easily slot together to make a square or rectangular frame.
- Plastic plumbers’ tubing makes an inexpensive DIY frame which can be cut to the shape required. Add corner connectors and legs if required.
- Traditionally silk painting was done in France using wooden frames with “picot” attached. These were sharp, strong needles sticking up from the wood, and were very effective. They are rarely seen these days as they’ve been replaced by many other types of frames.
- Metal frames with holes in them through which red plastic push pins attached the silk. Not very popular any more, but they still work.
