Hello Silkworms!
Welcome to the May 2018 Paint On Silk News & Updates
Hello, hello! I hope you are feeling fabulous on this amazing day in May!
We’ve just celebrated Mothers’ Day here in Australia, with a zillion people having picnics and barbeques at the end of my street on the beach front.
So delightful to see all the families and friends having so much fun!
Silk Painting Courses Online
The first batch of silk painting courses have been going great!
The feedback from the students has been so valuable — and will help me tweak and make the courses even better for the next round — and we’ve had a ton of fun!! 🙂
The next Courses will be released shortly – so stay tuned for the Early Bird pricing if you’re on the Mailing List!
Silk Painting Workshop in Person?
I’ve had a couple of enquiries from people who’d like to come to my Studio to attend a one-day or two-day silk painting Workshop. I’m located about 20 mins drive from Brisbane airport (Australia), on the coast in a beach suburb.
If this is something you might be interested in, I’d love to hear from you! Please send me an email here >>
If enough people would like to do this, I can definitely consider it, start planning, and find some local accommodation. This would be a lot of fun and a great adventure!

Above: Here is a little bit of inspiration from a watercolour artist – so this is painted on PAPER not SILK – but it’s a wonderful way to imagine “layers” when painting on silk. Have you tried anything like this yet?

Above is another of Josie Lewis Art techniques — watercolours on paper
This technique can give us wonderful ideas and we must give ourselves permission to be playful and try new and unusual things!
Let me know if you try this fun way of painting on your silk!
To achieve something like this with SILK PAINTING could be done in a multitude of ways — here are two – wash and iron white silk and stretch it, then try these techniques:
- mix some clear water-based gutta with water to make it as thin as water, and then paint a small piece of silk 8×8″ or 10″x10″ etc (whatever you like). With a paintbrush for each colour (or an eye-dropper), create some shapes like this video. Use a piece of cardboard or anything else to drag across the coloured dots.
- in a white icecube tray, put some drops of colour into separate icecubes holes. With an eye-dropper, squeeze out a few drops of water-based gutta (or outliner) into each colour, mix with a paintbrush for each, and then proceed to put the drops of paint onto the silk. Drag the cardboard etc across the colours when you’re ready.
What was the outcome?? I’d love to see it! Post photos (in the Comments below) and share with us, as a burst of colour and creativity from your heart and Studio to ours!
Do you like seeing this type of videos to get the creative juices flowing?
I’ll be posting new ones this week on Facebook — I’ve been testing out some new silk painting techniques, AND some new fancy video techniques 🙂

As well as paintbrushes, I use watercolour pencils when I doodle in my sketchbook, and if I’m out at a cafe, I put a little bit of water into a folding plastic cup I keep in my handbag. After colouring in the designs on the page, I dip a paintbursh into the water and paint a “wash” over the colours, turning them into “paints” rather than pencil colours.
I love it! Such a fun thing to do when I’m relaxing in a cafe 🙂
