I’m just getting started with Silk Painting
What do I need to buy for painting on silk?
Many people think silk painting is very expensive, but in reality, it doesn’t need to be. I’m providing links to amazon.com so wherever yuo live in the world, you can shop safely and securely.
Please note I may receive a teeny tiny commission if you buy anything on amazon after you click my links – thanks ever so much xox
- silk Habotai, 8 Mommie (weight) is perfect for beginners, I recommend this for all my Students:
- buy in fabric / textile stores near where you live
- or buy on amazon >>
- Silk Habotai Scarves, already hemmed which makes it easier to create something to wear straight away
- 15×60″ Jacquard silk scarf, buy on amazon >>
- white Silk Satin 36″ square scarf on amazon >>
Read about other types of silk to try when you have mastered painting on Silk Habotai >>
- paintbrushes – soft and suitable for watercolour painting
- can be found in $2 Stores for about … $2.00 🙂
- also available on amazon >>
- silk dyes – so many brands, I recommend Jacquard silk dyes (not paints!) for my Students
- Jacquard silk dyes can be found on amazon.com >>
- and several local suppliers (who may also sell on amazon)
- some type of resist product to create outlines and shapes to prevent the dyes from flowing too far – this is also known as an “outliner” or Gutta (pronounced Gootah)
- several brands can be found on amazon.com >>
- Applicator bottle for Gutta
- pack of 3 available on amazon.com >>
- thumbtacks to pin the silk to a wooden frame (I use Fredrix artist stretcher bar frames – cheap and easy to assemble)
- many colours available on amazon.com >>
- a frame (I use Fredrix artist stretcher bar frames – cheap and easy to assemble)
- I buy 4 for each size scarf / frame, I create square and rectangular frames – so easy to assemble and pull apart! available on amazon.com >>
- the frames might be 24×24″, so I use 4 x 24″ stretcher bars which push together in the corners
- I might need a frame 12×24″ for a project, so I’ll use 2 x 12″ and 2 x 24″ stretcher bars.
- I like to recommend starting out small – 12×12″ or 18×18″ is a good size to try out on, and once you feel comfortable painting on this size, try a larger frame – woohoo! I can’t wait to hear how you get on 🙂
