  1. I got through module one with everything making sense.
I have had some computer and modem issues and each video took ages to download and it has slowed me down on ordering products. I have upgraded now – was due anyway, and have started on module two tonight.
I am soooo looking forward to putting brush to silk.
I have been searching the internet for products tonight, there are no suppliers in Mt. Gambier, that I know of anyway.
I ordered some Habutai silk so hopefully that will be here in a couple of days.
Now am on the hunt for dye’s Jacquard seems to stick out but I am not sure of the best place to order. Do you have any suggestions/recommendations for ordering dye’s on-line, just to get me started anyway. I was thinking of getting yellow, red and blue to start with as I can them mix other colours from that. OR Have you managed to put starter kits together??

    • Fiona hi! I’m sooo pleased Module 1 makes sense, now you’ve learnt all the bits and pieces the rest will be straightforward (fingers’ crossed!)

Oh dang, the old computer and modem issues – so you’ve found out you need to upgrade to be able to watch videos online, and now you’ve done that, you’re all set – woohoo! Module 2 will be so much fun!

Our emails must have crossed :-) You’ve now received mine about the Silk Painting Kits so I’ll be in touch with info later. And yes, starting with just a couple of colours is the best way to go.

      I’m so excited for you!
      Talk soon

  2. Hi Teena, Well I have nearly got my gear together, my silk arrived today it is beautiful, it is just one piece 1 metre by 1 metre. I will wash it this weekend ready for when my dye arrives – hopefully Monday. So nearly ready to play.
My Dye’s I sourced online should be here Monday.
I have gutta coming as well so will be ready when that module is opened.
I have ordered more silk – trying different suppliers and I guess as I feel and paint more silk I will establish which supplier is best for me.

    • Hi Fiona, I’m so pleased your silk has arrived – I do love silk, the texture, the sheen, the softness – I never tire of it :-) Once you’ve started painting, I’m sure you’ll love the way the silk dyes flow and run across the silk, blend and merge together.

I look forward to seeing photos of your first samples, just remember to keep notes of everything you try, so you can reproduce your results at a later stage. Have fun!

  3. Hi Teena,
I got my dye’s today. From an online store in Victoria.
It says in the instructions to add white vinegar to the dye before using it. And water if you want to dilute it.
Why do you need to add vinegar?? Is this common??
Also it says on the label -heatfix dyes for protein and cellulose. On some of the labels they have crossed out cellulose. Do you know what this means?? and is it something I need to take into consideration with using them for painting??
Is this a normal label for silk dyes??
Do you have any advise on these types of dyes??
    Cheers
    Fiona

    • How exciting Fiona to have your silk dyes! Woohoo!

I’ve been painting on silk for about 30 years and I’ve tried many different top-level brands of silk dyes (not silk “paints”). In all this time, I’ve never needed to add white vinegar, so it really depends on the “brand” of silk dyes being used, and what the Dye Manufacturer’s instructions are.

My recommendation in a case like this is to go back to shop where the dyes were purchased and ask which brand of silk dyes they sell – ask for Information Sheets with step-by-step instructions on the dyes, or for a website link where you can go and read more about them online, so you have complete instructions.

The responsibility is with the seller to provide you with clear instructions on how to use the products they sell. Sorry I’m unable to help with this particular brand – so don’t hesitate to contact them and ask for help in understanding what their instructions mean.

To clarify your question on “cellulose”:

      • protein fibres come from animals – silk and wool (silkworms and sheep)
      • cellulose fibers come from plants – cotton, linen, and hemp

By crossing out the word “cellulose”, they’re letting you know that a particular dye colour cannot be used on cotton/linen/hemp fabric.

If they’ve been selling their brand for a long time and have fabulous examples of hand-painted silk to show you online, you can have confidence that what they’re selling you will work for you. Hope this helps,

      Cheers

  4. Hi Teena, When you draw on the silk in pencil, then I go over it with a clear gutta or the seaweed, does the pencil wash out too or I need to go over any penciled lines on the silk with a dark gutta.
Essentially if you want a clear outline I may have to put the clear gutta onto the silk from the picture pinned underneath???
    Cheers
    Fiona

    • I think my gutta is one you described in one of you video’s in module 4 that I will need to use for outline or detail. I googled it and when steamed it sets so you cant wash it out. Which wont matter, am happy to use it that way but need one that will washout, ie seaweed that I have coloured myself.
